Redistricting Study Sessions

Hosted by the WA Redistricting Reform Task Force

Redistricting, the processes of drawing district lines to elect our representatives, is once again in the national news. Where you draw the lines matters. Washington State will not be attempting mid-decade redistricting, although other states will be. When maps are redrawn for partisan gain, voters lose their ability to hold leaders accountable.

Join the Washington Redistricting Task Force for a study session on the basics of redistricting, the downfalls of our bi-partisan commission in Washington State and the controversy over mid-decade redistricting for partisan gain. This event is open to all. This session will provide essential information about redistricting and the movement toward a commission that puts people first.

The session will run 1 hour and 30 minutes and will be broken up into the follow parts. Feel free to join during the sections that most interest you.

  • First 30 minutes: Learn the basics of redistricting — how it works, why it matters, and the impact on Washington communities.
  • Second 30 minutes: Learn about reform strategies and the LWVWA’s campaign — building a more transparent, people-focused commission. Ask about successes in other states and discover ways to get involved.
  • Last 30 minutes: Ask your burning questions — what is mid-decade redistricting in Texas, California, and other states? What is Washington State’s current redistricting status? Will Section 2 of the federal Voting Right Act stand?
